Mtoto wa Jirani is a person (me) coined out of a gossip session between some neighbourhood househelps in one of Nairobi’s middle class estates.
The discussion involved gossiping about the neighbours’ kids and all the wrong things they do. The discussion went on till they saw me. As I passed them, one of them remarked:
“…na huyu mtoto wa jirani si kama wale wengine..” (Translation: The neighbour’s kid is not like the others…he’s different)”
Thus mtoto wa jirani was born…the kid who was different from the rest. Thus the philosophy behind mtoto wa jirani can be summarized by this quote:
“If you do what the world does, you become like the world. If you do something differently, you become potential”

‘Those that want only the best often get it.’
